Festo is bringing two impressive flying robots to RoboBoston this year! The bionic dragonfly, inspired by nature, can carry out more flight maneuvers than helicopters and motorized and non-motorized gliders combined. The Festo BionicSwifts, modeled after the swift family of birds, are agile and maneuverable. They can fly loops and steep turns with ease.
This is important because the public rarely sees the range of robots being developed and deployed. At the Seaport Common in Boston, more than 40 companies and universities will showcase their latest technologies at MassRobotics’ annual Robot Block Party. Festo’s flying robotic dragonfly and swift will be two of the many impressive robots on display.
Festo hopes to demonstrate how nature can inspire innovative robotics solutions. The company also hopes to show how its robots can be used for various applications, including aerial photography, surveying, search and rescue missions, and package delivery.
The way inspired the engineers was that animals fly. They studied the flight patterns of birds and insects to see how they could be applied to robots.
