What Happened? Google’s DeepMind AI division has caused a stir this week with the revelation of a new artificial intelligence system that is able to complete a wide range of complex tasks. But it was the comments from Dr. Nando de Freitas, research director at DeepMind, that caught the eye of many in the tech world. De Freitas said that human-level artificial intelligence was “inevitable” and that we should stop trying to achieve it.
Why is this important? These comments come at a time when the tech world is debating the role of artificial intelligence in society. There are those who believe that AI will eventually take over many jobs currently done by humans, and there are those who believe that AI will help humans to achieve new levels of productivity.
The deep learning system that DeepMind has developed is an important step toward human-level AI, but it is important to remember that we are still a long way from achieving it. The first 80% are the most straightforward to accomplish, with the last 20% requiring 80 percent of the effort.
In the meantime, we should focus on using AI to augment human abilities rather than replace them. I think AI is not here to replace people; rather, it is meant to empower them. To bring them together as one big organism called humanity. Just look at nature: The neocortex did not supplant the cells in our bodies; instead, it enabled and bound them into one big, efficient species known as homo sapien.
So let’s not worry about the inevitable rise of human-level AI. Instead, let’s focus on using AI to make us better humans.
